He wakes up and flips the pillow. She’s still asleep. It’s almost always like this. She will sleep until he wakes her. The room is hot with beer sweat and the covers are stale, uncomfortable against his morning skin. He kicks them down to his waist. Their clothes are scattered across the floor, tangled together in twists and folds. He looks down at his body. A little soft for his age, a result of all kinds of over-consumption, but she still wants him from time to time. He props himself against his elbow and looks into her sleeping face. Her cheeks are round and full around her mouth. Her lips are open and her eyelids flutter in response to some unknown dreaming thing.

Through an open window he can hear the city, already awake, already moving. He reaches up and draws the curtain open a few inches. Sunshine dances on her exposed breasts and he can see shadows angling around her strawberry nipples. They rise evenly with the cadence of her breathing,  and he can see all the little imperfections of her skin heaving like leaves on the lake of her body. Without thinking about what he’s doing he drops his right hand to her stomach, tracing the outline of her ribcage. She sighs in her sleep and turns her body away from him, now she lays on her side facing the faded paint of the wall. He coughs suddenly, a razor shot of pain catching in his throat and stopping his breath for a moment. She is undisturbed.

He lays there for some time, with his hands propped behind his head. He has given up the covers completely, his naked body laying in contrast to her shrouded outline. Sometimes he smokes quietly, emptying his lungs as he strains his neck back so his eyes point towards the cracked ceiling. Sometimes he reads and waits for her stir, so he can put his stories away and rustle the pages of her thoughts. But mostly he just lays there, canvassing his memories, and thinking about how it will be when she opens her eyes.

His head is thick and he feels the beat of his veins drumming in his ears. A glass of water would be nice. He lifts himself slowly from the bed and walks to the kitchen. It feels good to be there, standing naked, and he leans against the the sink. He reaches for a glass and fills it from the tap. The water is cool and refreshing. He swallows the first glass quickly then pours himself another. In the kitchen he is alone, without her body to frustrate his thoughts. The fridge is humming its persistent melody and he closes his eyes. He see’s time, spread out on all sides like an endless horizon. He feels it’s promise, like a cool breeze, on his skin. His eyes are open and the walls are there again. The walls that hold his time in a little box. They pretend to understand time, and hold it at bay, but he thinks he knows better. He puts his glass away.

In the room again he can feel her stirring by his side. She makes little noises and he can see that she will be his again, if only for a moment. She turns over and brings her body close to his. One of her legs drapes over his front and she rests a hand on his chest. Her knee is at his belly button. He can feel her toes cold against the inside of his thigh. He puts a hand in her hair and feels himself stiffening against her leg. She smiles, her eyes are still closed. The room is spinning now and he’s lost. His hands search her hair and pull her face against his. They kiss. She is awake now.
